Earn cash back on everyday purchases with Quidco - ££'s

If you haven't used Quidco before, I'd love to know where you've been hiding for the last 5-6 years! And if I'm really cruel, I could then go on to tell you, if you've spent any more than £25.00, on anything, in that time period then you've also given away free cash!!

So many people I speak to think it's hard-work, or complicated but its really not.  I was referred to Quidco in 2014 when my first claim was to renew my car insurance - I already knew which company I was going to choose for my renewal and so I just searched Quidco and found there was a huge £80 on offer if I bought it via their referral link... yes, £80 for a company I was already going to renew with...

Sure enough, within 90 days £80 appeared in my account... from there (understandably) I was hooked and now I earn on average £500 per year simply clicking referral links for items that I was going to buy anyway.

Quidco works by referring customers to Supplier websites, which then go on to purchase.  That is quite simply it.  Sometimes they offer higher rates than others and so it's worth keeping an eye out for any exclusive rates.

At the time of writing, there's £50 for opening a TSB Bank account and £85 for signing up to Vodafone Broadband, doing this in the next hour could net you a bargain, save you money and gain you £130!

And just to prove Quidco works and can work for you, here's your first taster of how simple it is!

Click here or the image below to sign up today, in doing so you'll receive £5 and so will I !

I'd love to hear how people get on and if this has helped you start earning cash back on your purchases!  please comment below on your savings and referrals :).

PS4 fails to update 6.72 with SU-30625-6

That awkward moment right, you sit down, ready to play... and no one appears ‘online’ you know this can’t be true, how can no one else be online, so you examine...oh wait, yup, update due.  Only this time, you get the failure code SU-30625-6 when pressing update.

It seems Sony May well have messed up the update, or a correlation I found for me, my PS4 tried to do it whilst in sleep mode.

It’s a simple fix however so worry not :).

Navigate to Notifications, highlight the update, press Options button and select delete.

Now go back and try again, it will download just fine and work a treat in 20 minutes or less.

Happy Gaming!

Activation error DISM on Windows Server - could not activate

Ever tried to activate an Eval download of Windows Server and got an activation failure? Or got an error 50?

The command most commonly referred to online and in Microsoft guides is as below:

Firstly, make sure your version is actually genuine and you're licensing the right version too.

Run the following command:

DISM /online /Get-TargetEditions

This will reveal what you can upgrade Eval too, in a majority of cases we'll use Server Standard as an example but this refers to datacenter too.

Run the below to license your server:
DISM /online /Set-Edition:ServerStandard /ProductKey:XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX /AcceptEula

If this still doesn't work, something that I spent hours of my life one evening figuring out... is that a command window that isn't elevated will produce an error 50, unknown error and/or a activation couldn't be completed.

Yes, its truly that simple! Elevate Command Prompt and try again, 9/10 this will fix the issue for you!

The age of the Digital Workplace Transformation

Almost every week now I find myself discussing Digital Workplace Transformation with CIOs, CFOs and IT Managers alike.  It’s the new buzz word ‘on the street’ but what does it really mean? And is it relevant to your business?
Over the last four or five years, I’ve seen this ‘Transformation process’ evolve, from Business Transformation, to Desktop Transformation, Application Transformation & now Digital Workplace Transformation.  The approach is clearly a logical evolution of their predecessors but in my opinion, the drivers for these transformations are also now changing.
The days of business IT being driven by an application are long behind us, if anything the end user employee is now at the heart of these transformations, empowered to put forward their case for how their workplace and style affects their productivity and their overall wellbeing.

So why is it important?
The touchpoints that our employees have within their workplaces play a vital role in how they stay motivated, informed, and engaged with what they do. This is especially true for businesses with large, widely distributed workforces.  The ability to provide rapid innovation, necessitates modern tools that can effectively keep all employees fully informed.
This requirement, combined with the growing focus on work/life balance, flexible hours, and the ability to work from multiple locations (including ‘home’), means that companies must provide their employees—including offline and non-desk workers—with an employee experience that is truly mobile.
Enabling your workforce to engage with co-workers and information wherever they are and whenever they choose is a differentiator in the increasingly competitive market for attracting talent and creating the positive employee experiences necessary for businesses in today’s market to thrive.

What is driving this change?
Motivated employees understand their contribution to the company and its success, they no longer want to sit in the background and work alone in their day-to-day functions. Instead they very much want to be involved and offer their input where possible to feel a part of the team – (herein should form the basic communication requirements of your Workplace Strategy).
‘Generation Y’ or ‘Millennials’, now make up the single largest group in our labour force, with ‘Generation Z’ or ‘iGen’s’ not far behind! And so, engaging this generation has become a top priority for many businesses in their visions for the future and whilst addressing their market appeal.  According to a recent Microsoft study, 67 percent of employees use their personal devices at work, irrespective of their company's official BYOD policy.
This trend continues to expand as employees feel more engaged and motivated when they can use their own devices for business purposes. In addition, I also read recently that by 2020, as a direct result of the changing need to communicate and engage - there are expected to be 639 million paid users of enterprise social networks…

How and where does a Digital Workplace strategy fit into my business?
Most businesses albeit different sizes, sectors, age, working styles etc etc - will often come back to similar conclusions when looking into the use-cases to be addressed by their Workplace strategy.  These are broken down in my experience, into Communication, Collaboration, Knowledge & Process.
Communication– will include the sharing of time sensitive or mission critical information to staff, customers and/or stakeholders.
Collaboration- which often looks largely toward Intranets & shared resources, improving the ability to work in unity on projects, documents (whilst maintaining the levels of security required of the business).
Process– The part that focusses in on the expectation of the business to provide and conform to a standard, often set out within their industry – typically Human Resources, Customer Relationship Management & Enterprise Resource Planning tools etc.
Knowledge – Often linking toward the structure of data systems, how easy it is to access and locate resources for utilisation in the day-to-day positions of the business?

Who is the Digital Workplace aimed at?
‘Knowledge Workers’ are typically seen as the main users of a digital workplace, and often current strategies are designed specifically for these people.  In many workplaces however, still exist desk worker finance & Human resource departments, along with Temporary and contract workers, subcontractors, remote workers and even some outsourced (yet inclusive) functions!
Until now, these people couldn’t be reached by a typical digital workplace strategy that was only accessible on company owned and provided devices.  This is why going mobile on the personal devices of your employees is one of the key requirements in the enterprise digital age.

Should this include your mobility strategy:
Supporting mobile users must be part of any successful digital workplace strategy, especially in large, dispersed organisations, allowing for greater connectivity in regards to employee communication and productivity—utilising technology like mobile online meetings, online training, video learning, centralised document editing & application consumption.
Making functionality easily available on personal mobile devices means an employee app that can meet several specific requirements but most of all is secure, easy to use, none-intrusive and as flexible as possible.
Utilising Virtualisation technologies combined with BYOD, the ability to publish applications, enforce policies and remain impartial to the user’s own device is actually a very real possibility - and it should be considered as an essential part of your overall Workplace strategy.

In summary: The Employee Is the Heart of the Digital Workplace
It’s important to remember that a digital workplace strategy is a program, not a project, and its implementation must start by taking into account the internal and external insights of your workforce, followed by continued improvement and refresh cycles in line with the digital presence and participation of senior management.  The ultimate point of a sound digital workplace strategy is to build a more effective, more efficient business.  A unified workplace application which delivers everything surrounding the four main criteria set out to achieve - is the best tool for this job.
More than “just an app,” it will be a single communication hub for the entire business that’s mobile but also works great on desktops, laptops, tablets & more.
Thought of in this way, your digital workplace strategy will attract, develop and retain staff – which in turn will strengthen your business moving forward into the digital age.

Ethereum Node Connected - Stuck on Splash Screen!

Yet another issue with the Ethereum Wallet...

I've had Bitcoin and Litecoin wallets for years, none of them have caused me anywhere near as much pain as this one has, especially so in such a small space of time!

So here's how I got around this one! (On Mac).

Go to the Applications Directory within Finder, locate Ethereum Wallet.

Right click and go Show Package Contents, in here is a folder called MacOS and then an Exec within it.

Open a Terminal Window and drag the Exec file over the Terminal Window.

Hit Enter and it will launch the Wallet but in a terminal mode.

This will give you the view of exactly what is happening in the background and for some reason, allow the app to sync and open much quicker than just normal opening it within the GUI.

Ethereum Wallet Stuck on 99% or XX Blocks remaining!

Believe me when I say, this is one of the most frustrating things to happen!

Imagine this, I first get into Crypto - I buy 5 Ether through coinbase - download the Ethereum Wallet so I can have an offline Wallet store and without thinking about it - I got the wallet address and sent it all.

I then left my i7, 12GB, 1TB SSD Linux machine running with QoS enabled for bandwidth benefits for three days.. gradually getting more and more nervous.

I couldn't seem to get past the last few blocks, it would stall or just never really get anywhere!

Firstly, as an observation - I found that if you launch the application - you lose any form of syncing entirely, so leave it at the splash screen.

Secondly however if you really don't think its going to connect, then try these steps:

Go to the Develop Menu item, and change your Sync mode to "Light" it may say Beta on it but its ok.

Go to File > Backup > Accounts data

Rename ChainData to ChainData1 (or whatever you want).  Close down your Wallet and re-launch it.

This didn't work first time for me, (maybe I was too keen) but if thats the case - have faith, close the app again and re-open it.  Leave it on Splash, give it 15 minutes (or so depending on your circumstance) and horrar it should work!!!

Hope this helps somebody else who may have stupidly jumped without looking too...

When the water stops...

An interesting analogy was presented to me recently and I liked it so much that I thought I'd share it with others...
We go about our daily lives, almost with an element of ignorance, in that we generally take no appreciation of the day-to-day services we consume, use or even provide.
We're woken up in the morning by our alarm clock - We don't sit back and think about the labourers working in the power stations nor do we think about the components that form the intricate circuits within the box that we so abruptly hit and shout at.  We then proceed to take a shower, where we pass no regard for the Gas stations, the circuit designs, the electricity, the water, the purification, the plumbing, the drainage, the glass blowing... and on and on and on.
My point here isn't that we don't care about these things...but more so that we've developed into a nation that take these luxuries for granted - and so when we go to sleep we expect to be woken up, when we get in the shower we expect hot water.
...When is the only time you notice these luxuries...when they don't work as we expect them too...
A friend of mine introduced me to this mindset and quite rightly so, it starts your mind thinking about things - but the most interesting element I found was that this mindset links directly to the IT industry and the new Cloud era that we sit in.
Customers that I speak to don't care where the system is, they don't care how it works and they don't care what happens in the transit between us, and them - all they care about is when I turn on the tap...I get my water.   When I want to consume my IT, it just works.
I love this thought process but it does highlight one fairly obvious concern to me, when the plumbing fails - you have to be sure your supply can be resumed.  Be sure to guarantee your service can be constant, even when it's not.
So, I ask you firstly to spare a thought for the providers that we often forget about and expect to deliver.
Then, make sure that you vet your supply.  If infrastructure is critical to your business - when the tap stops dripping - how fast can you be back up and running...

Seen Software (SaaS), Infrastructure (IaaS) and Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS)? Try Desktop (DaaS), Metal (MaaS) and Disaster Recovery-as-a-Service (DRaaS)

It's no secret that the public cloud market has been growing like wildfire. In fact, a recent Gartner study found spending on public cloud services is growing at more than 28% per year and private cloud spending is three times that of public cloud!  That suggests total cloud spending in 2016 to hit £155 billion.
The focus in the industry over the past few years has been on the core cloud management services of SaaS, PaaS and IaaS.  But to truly understand how cloud computing is evolving you have to dive deeper below the surface.  Two major developments are driving the evolution of cloud: Management and Specialisation.
In the management space, innovations like self-service portals have given end-users a much-preferred way to request and consume their services.  Whereas specialist and dedicated professionals, have developed enterprise solutions with technologies like Citrix XenDesktop, VMware View and Nvidia GRID.
Three specialist areas that have developed as part of natural market progression, are DRaaS, MaaS & DaaS - but what are they?

MaaS

MaaS - the dynamic provisioning and deployment of whole physical servers, as opposed to the provisioning of virtual machines - is a drastically underrated cloud service.  MaaS services will finally open the floodgates to allow any application to be run in the cloud – any application with any service level.  That means multi-tiered apps with a backend Oracle database, home grown, performance-intensive applications, low latency trading applications, etc.
It’s been hard for people to pay attention to MaaS, mostly because server virtualisation has been “the shiny new toy” over the past few years and frankly MaaS is not an easy thing to provide. But that may change once IT administrators see the speed, scalability, agility and simplicity with which they can deploy and protect their underlying server infrastructure.
The statistics are clear – a large percentage of servers have been virtualized in the enterprise (40% - 50% now and heading to 60% - 70%). However, there are still a large number of applications that remain running on bare metal. That important (and underappreciated) fact means that MaaS could be a key ingredient to driving more widespread adoption of cloud technology.

DRaaS

Over the past few years, IT departments have had to live in a culture of cost reduction – it’s just been the way of life.  That culture has resulted in aging equipment, overworked staff and lots of cut corners - a perfect recipe for higher failure rates.  The fact is that hardware failure and human error are still the leading causes of unplanned outages - but devastating storms and other catastrophes are also forcing businesses to get serious about geographic disaster recovery planning.  Some estimates put 2014 weather related disaster costs at almost £70 billion worldwide, up 25% from 2013.

DaaS

Desktop management is a fundamental service for IT organisations.  It’s critical for keeping the employees of a company productive. But there have been long standing challenges with managing the traditional desktop.  The investment in desktop hardware can be a significant capital expense, especially for large organisations and day-to-day management of these devices can be a huge drain on resources.
DaaS solutions are secure, cost-effective, easy-to-use and portable – you can get the same desktop on any device.
According to the 451 Research Group, “Interest in third-party DaaS is at fever pitch.” IT consumerisation, BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) initiatives, increase in mobile workers, Windows 8 migrations and Security/IP concerns are driving organisations to reevaluate their desktop strategy.
So, if you're not looking at IaaS, PaaS, or SaaS...make sure you've seen DRaaS, DaaS & MaaS.

Citrix VDI-in-a-Box and whats next?!

VDI-in-a-Box is on its way out, but killing the product wasn't always Citrix's intention. Technical problems, development time and a poor sales strategy appear to be the cause of the product's death.
VDI-in-a-Box has been rumoured to be on the chopping block since Citrix acquired Kaviza (the original company behind the product) back in May 2011.  While many people lauded Citrix for gaining a VDI product that was easy to install and operate, others thought that the acquisition might have been nothing more than an attempt to alleviate the competition.
Many of us held out hope that there would ultimately be some blending of XenDesktop and VDI-in-a-Box, with the best elements of each creating a new VDI platform, but that never proved true.
Citrix earlier this year were quoted as saying “We’re going to ‘end-of-sale’ that product and it will be replaced by a simpler and more price competitive version for VDI that we have coming”.   The news comes as no real surprise, given that in 5 years since the products acquisition, there’s been virtually nothing done with the software at all.  But the future (for the moment) seems unclear.
There were/are two very distinct groups of customers when it comes to Citrix, those who want VDI in a Box - for its simplicity, its price point and its low maintenance requirements.  And then those who want XenDesktop, which can offer the same features (along with a whole host of others) but very clearly requires a different skill set.  On the news of the products soon to be death, customers are worrying – what should they be doing next? And what could possibly help in this situation where moving to a more complex product is not the answer.

For me, I think this is genuinely a fantastic reason to start thinking about outsourcing your Citrix infrastructure to a specialist provider.  Ask yourself these questions, would it be more cost effective if you could pay only for what you use? Would it be less stressful if you let somebody else maintain the complexities of a more advanced system? And would it better enable your business if you could reap the features and benefits of a more powerful system at a third of the cost, with little complexity?  If you answered yes to any of the above questions, then you’re in the right place to talk to a  managed services provider - and you should be!

Alas, as we soon say Goodbye in 2016 to Citrix VDI-in-a-Box, a promising product that had its own niche market appeal.  We open the doors to a new era of outsourced cloud delivered solutions.  One that delivers all the business benefits of a low maintenance, feature rich, cost effective solution – but delivered in a different way.
Talk to me today, to see how I can help!
